PROCEDURE FOR THE REMOVAL OF POTTERTON NEATAHEAT
AND OTHER BOILERS CONTAING ASBESTOS
THE DANGER
There are many older boilers still in use that contain seals and insulation pads that contain asbestos. These parts constitute no danger until the asbestos is disturbed. The danger is from breathing in the asbestos dust.
THE BOILER
If the boiler is found or thought to contain asbestos the following precautions should be followed:-
1. Make sure that a clear access is provided to the boiler, cover all working areas with a plastic sheeting.
2. Isolate all services to the system.
3. Remove the boiler casing and protect any electrical parts with waterproof sheeting. Spray all the gasket, combustion chamber, flue hood and seals that are visible with water to lessen the chance of breathing in the dust.
4. Place the fan and flue hood into plastic bags.
5. As more parts of the boiler become exposed spray them with water, and ensure that they are kept damp at all times.
6. Disconnect the boiler from mounting and place an plastic sheets reattach the fan and flue hood to the boiler.
7. Spray all exposed asbestos parts with water and place all the parts, plastic sheeting and bags into the double wrap provide, seal and label “Asbestos Waste”. Place in a sealed van ready for disposal
8. Remove disposable protective clothing and mask and treat in the same manner as asbestos waste.
9. All waste to be places into the skip provided by Tony Morton of Ashton-under-Lyne, who is a registered asbestos removal company at the end of each day.
GOOD WORK PRACTICES
* Don’t use power tools on asbestos material as this may create dust. Use hand tools instead.
* Always wear protective clothing whilst working with asbestos. This clothing should be removed on site and sent to a specialist cleaner or placed into a bag and disposed of as if asbestos waste. Do not save for re-use or take home for washing.
* Always wear a suitable mask or respirator, asbestos dust is very fine and is not always visible to the naked eye.
* Clean up asbestos dust as you go along with a “Type H” vacuum cleaner. Do not use brushes or brooms.
* Wash hands well before meals and when you go home.
